Six reasons why you should go to the Laneways Festival
Holy shit. Did you guys see the Laneways lineup? It’s basically a who’s who of all the amazingly great new bands that we always talk about on this blog. Arguably the best NZ festival lineup of the last decade (no I’m not being paid by the Laneways people). Its about time we had a decent festival here that’s dedicated to exciting new bands and artists, so here’s six reasons why you should definitely attend. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart The best bits of early 90s shoegaze, Smiths-esque pop and 80s bubble gum rock. Great songs great vibe and just a really fun band. Their album Belong is easily one of my favourite albums of 2011. Washed Out Hazy chillwave vibes – chillwave has got to be one of the great new(ish) genres of this year. The internet is your friend: The Dos and Don’ts of social media for musicians
We live in an age where technology is everything. The internet has revolutionised the way we listen to, discover and share music, and if you think otherwise, well.. you’re a bit of a numpty. Sites like Facebook and Twitter are designed to be as easy as possible to use, yet somehow some bands and artists still manage to completely Donald Duck it up. So here’s a list of a few things I’ve noticed, some things not to do and some tips for getting your music out there. Facebook != Twitter Facebook and Twitter are not the same thing, so don’t treat them as such. Facebook is great for sending out links to articles and chatting with your fans in the comments sections. However you want to watch how many posts you send out a day: too many and people will hide your updates, or worse, unlike your page. On Twitter … Read more
Tips for getting your music pressed on vinyl
This is an article I originally wrote for the Facebook group I work for a NZ music website named MusicHype and we recently released our first vinyl compilation – The NZ Indie Mixtape, a collection of up and coming NZ bands as selected by our members. Getting something released on vinyl is an intimidating concept, and as we found out, there is a bit of a learning curve involved. So I thought it might be helpful to share some of our experiences and what we’d learned with anyone that may be thinking of releasing music on vinyl. What company to go with? This was a really tough one for us, as most vinyl pressers expect a certain amount of knowledge on your part as to what you are paying for. It’s hard to know what you’re getting for your money and what’s included in the price. Most companies will send … Read more
