Best Songs of the Year 2015

Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas – Beach Slang Mike: I listened to Beach Slang a lot in the latter half of 2015, and the only reason they haven’t featured more prominently in our albums list is because – as Dan pointed out to me – they only really do one song over and over. But what a song! I mean their style of music is everything I love about rock music: anthemic vocals, fuzzed out guitars, no pretension, jangly bits, a punk rock beat. But there really isn’t a lot of depth to them. For me that’s not really a criticism: I’d rather hear a band do one thing and do it brilliantly than be a half arsed jack of all trades, and “Bad Art & Weirdo” ideas nicely typifies everything that is great about Beach Slang. Picture This – Kero Kero Bonito Brendan: I’m a bit of a Japanophile … Read more

Tracks of the Mo – iii

Check out a few of the tracks below that have been blowing Riot Radio socks off this week. Wavves – Way Too Much (2015) Wavves. *shakes his head* Wavves, right, you know what I mean? Ha! Wavves! They’re just one of those bands that everything they touch turns to gold. New single Way too much is no exception. The track bursts into action with their punchy punk rock with its trademark just-enough-sloppiness, and doesn’t cease. The track length weighs in at a mammoth 2.33 long so you’d be mad to not chuck it on repeat for the sake of rinsability. It’s one of those tracks that just puts me in a good mood, hence my reason for thrashing the buggery out of it. Musical highlight: Well, that chorus is immense but the fact that it’s a new Wavves track is probably the gimme. Jonathan Bree – Bored at the Mall … Read more

Tracks of the mo – ii

Do you ever get dismayed at the sheer volume of wildly decent music all the talented minstrels of the world are pouring out? I do, I really do. There seems to be an endless stream of decent tracks and who in the name of Ravishing Rick Rude in crotchless leather pantaloons can keep up? So, to help you folk narrow down and tune in, every Thursday we’ll be putting out a brief list of songs titled Tracks o the Mo featuring some of the top tracks that we at Riot Radio find impossible to not rinse and repeat. Check em. Kero kero Bonito – Picture this I’m a bit of a Japanophile – no not of the tentacle-porn loving type. It’s hard to spend two years in Tokyo and not absorb a fundamental appreciation for the Japanese style of doing things, and this goes for j-pop too. You just end up … Read more

Best Songs of the Year 2013

2013 was an amazing year. If you didn’t hear any music you liked then you simply weren’t listening. It definitely felt like more of an albums year to me though, which is why you’ll find that a lot of the songs on the list are from otherwise disappointing albums or are from one-off single releases – we didn’t want to double up too much with our albums list. This year we roped in some mates to help us through our critique of albums: meet Dave and Bren. You can also hear us talking about the year in music on Dave and Dan’s Egonomist podcast, and check out our Best of 2013 Spotify playlist. Enjoy our best songs of 2013! (Albums coming soon) “Bullet” – Franz Ferdinand Mike: Any year with a new Franz Ferdinand release in it is a good one. And while Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action was … Read more

The Strypes are fucking great

I wasn’t too sure about the hype surrounding Ireland’s The Strypes the first time I heard them. The return of UK* guitar pop has been falsely heralded more times than Pete Doherty’s had hepatitis scares. But occasionally its worth investigating further than the hype (the Arctic Monkeys anyone?) and sometimes it takes a live performance to really understand what a band is “about”. The Strypes first few releases were covers of rhythm and blues standards by the likes of Bo Diddley and Muddy Waters, and although undoubtably brilliant, it wasn’t until I saw a live performance of their first original single “Blue Collar Jane” on the Jools Holland show earlier this week that I really fell in love with this band: Fucking magic. The fact that they’re only 16 years old and hail from the Irish equivalent of Palmerston North makes them even more special. I can’t wait to hear more … Read more

First Classic Track of the Year: Joey Bada$$ – ‘Unorthodox’

Joey Bada$$ is a rapper from Brooklyn who raps in the classic New York style. There’s nothing retro about this – just a simple love of hip hop and hip hop traditions, a focus on lyrics and flow rather than production and pimping. Having said that, the track is produced by DJ Premier so you know you’re in for a treat. Keep an eye out for an album from Joey later this year – fingers crossed for another superb year of hip hop in 2013.

The Unfortunate Weezer Project

Remember last year when Mike placed Weezer’s Make Believe on the list of Worst Albums of All Time? He was right then and he’s right now. As Mike says, the Weezer all right thinking people know and love died that day. Why is it that whenever Weezer put out a new album we all clamour to find out if it’s a return to form? Why do we give Rivers Cuomo another chance when he’s proven time and again he’s Lucy Van Pelt to our Charlie Brown, forever taking away the football at the last second. I think it’s because Weezer’s first two albums are so good that we still think of them as a class band lacking a bit of form. Chatting with Mike and a few others over the years I’ve wondered if it’d be possible to scour the post 2000 Weezer catalog and make an album that’s as … Read more
