Best Songs of the Year 2015

Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas – Beach Slang Mike: I listened to Beach Slang a lot in the latter half of 2015, and the only reason they haven’t featured more prominently in our albums list is because – as Dan pointed out to me – they only really do one song over and over. But what a song! I mean their style of music is everything I love about rock music: anthemic vocals, fuzzed out guitars, no pretension, jangly bits, a punk rock beat. But there really isn’t a lot of depth to them. For me that’s not really a criticism: I’d rather hear a band do one thing and do it brilliantly than be a half arsed jack of all trades, and “Bad Art & Weirdo” ideas nicely typifies everything that is great about Beach Slang. Picture This – Kero Kero Bonito Brendan: I’m a bit of a Japanophile … Read more

Best Albums of the Year 2013

So, 2013 eh? Maybe it was just because it was the year I finally got round to getting a paid Spotify account, but it seemed to me that there was a ridiculous amount of great music in 2013. It definitely felt like an album year to me, so hopefully you’ll find a few on this list that you really dig. As with the songs, we didn’t set a limit to the albums on this list – there were as many great albums as there were great albums, so setting a fixed limit seemed to defeat the purpose. We’re joined by Dave and Bren and you can hear our Egonomist podcast of the year in music here. We’ve also got a Best of 2013 Spotify playlist here. Enjoy! Later… When The Tv Turns To Static – Glasvegas Mike: Glasvegas’ 2008 debut album was a true classic:t song after song of anthemic … Read more

Review: Best Coast – ‘The Only Place’

Best Coast’s 2010 record Crazy For You was an album that triumphed through it’s simplicity. Unashamedly pop in nature, the songs were sincere and catchy odes to love, life and sunshine. A beautiful record and one of the best released in 2010. So two years on it’s follow-up time, and Best Coast are back with The Only Place, an album which suffers from a fairly typical case of “second record syndrome”. That’s not to say it’s a bad record: it’s not. It’s a good record – even a very good record. It just suffers a little from the very thing that made their first record so great: its simplicity. Let’s start from the beginning. Opener and title track “The Only Place” (free download here) is top notch: a poppy ode to the band’s home state of California over jangly guitars and a melody to die for. A perfect first single: … Read more

The new Wavves EP is cool as shit

Wavves are a kick ass rock band. Sure, they may have one of the worst Twitter accounts ever written by a fully grown adult, but they sure do write some fine tunes. Last year’s King Of The Beach was pretty much my favourite album of the year, and they’re back with a brand new EP of all new tunes that actually improves on its predecessor. The Life Sux EP is a slightly poppier, slightly slicker release than KoftB. Main Wavves man Nathan Williams has upped his songwriting game and raised the stakes nicely. Check out opener “Bug”. Kinda like a buzzed out and bratty Hüsker Dü meets a psychedelic early Green Day, with just the right level of stoner abandon to make it appeal to the internet generation. Cool, but it doesn’t care that it’s cool. Track two “I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl” is more of the same and available … Read more

Some cool recent stuff that I’ve been listening to

Sorry about the lack of posts lately, folks. Been busy as shit. Expect more content soon, plus more guest posts and more awesomeness etc etc. Anyway, as a stop gap, here’s some cool recent shit that’s been floating my boat lately. Hope you like ’em. Wilco – “I Might” One thing’s for sure, the release of a new Wilco album is an event. While I like pretty much everything Jeff Tweedy has ever done, I do feel that Wilco’s best studio years are behind them. But hey, I honestly hope I’m wrong, and they are absolutely the type of band that have the capacity to surprise you with every move. Also, I’ve found with every album since A Ghost Is Born the songs don’t really take on their true colours until you’ve seen them performed live. So fingers crossed for another NZ tour in 2011. Anyway, the new album is … Read more

Steven Sourman reviews Riot Radio’s favourite records

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome back Steven Sourman: the beige face of backwards looking music journalism. I say, these Riot Radio fellows obviously have some doubts about their own music taste because they have asked for my expert advice on some of their favourite albums. I notice there’s no Prince amongst them so it looks like I’m in for a rough ride. Still, what do you expect from a bunch of people that refuse to fear modern music like the not-as-good-as-vintage-jazz juggernaut that it is? Anyway let’s have a look at these “albums” they have asked me to review (I say “album”, but Dark Side Of The Moon is an album – I doubt any of these could be synced in a non-ironic way with a Judy Garland movie): Best Coast – Crazy For You Hahaha, Riot Radio. You are joking with this one, surely? This sounds vaguely like any … Read more

Mike’s Top 10 of 2010 – SONGS

I’m a songs person rather than an albums person in general, so here are my favourite songs of 2010. The Naked and Famous – “Young Blood” Song of the year for me, no question. It’s everything that MGMT’s second album material should have been but wasn’t – anthemic, instantly memorable, modern and beautiful. Well deserving of the Silver Scroll for songwriting – the system occasionally works, folks. If you didn’t like this song in 2010, your ears were painted on. The Drums – “Let’s Go Surfing” Catchy as fuck, this was the instantly memorable indie pop hit of the year. Making something new and fresh from a tried and tested theme, it’s impossible not to be swept up in the psychedelic, fresh-faced, unashamed optimism of this song. Tommy Ill – “Best Damn Evening” Wellington rapper Tommy Ill captures all that is good about hip hop – well crafted, superbly delivered … Read more

Mike’s Top 10 of 2010 – ALBUMS

What a great year for music. Here’s my take on the what I thought the best albums of 2010 were. Best Albums Wavves – “King of the Beach” Scratchy guitars and shouty songs about going to the beach and being an idiot. This album is irresistible – it’s impossible not to get excited by Wavves’ energy. Definitely the album I’ve listened to the most this year, I really can’t recommend this highly enough. Best Coast – “Crazy for You” It’s unashamedly pop music – which is perhaps why it was missing from a lot of people’s end of year lists – but that’s what I like about it. Sunny melodies, guitars and giant pop hooks. A breath of fresh air, and a great summer soundtrack. Broken Bells – “Broken Bells” A supergroup made up of James Mercer from The Shins and star producer Dangermouse was always going to turn heads, … Read more

The Go! Team featuring Bethany Cosentino (Best Coast) – “Buy Nothing Day”

Holy shit this is awesome. After raving about how incredible The Go! Team were last week, I finally caught the much-hyped next single ‘”Buy Nothing Day” featuring Best Coast on C4. It really is a near perfect pop song, a late contender for single of the year. It combines everything that is great about modern pop, guitars, a great melody, an irresistible beat, and an energy that you can’t describe. I haven’t been this excited by a song since The Naked and Famous’s “Young Blood” 6 months ago – this is what great music sounds like, people. Further evidence that “Rolling Blackouts” will be an incredible musical kick-start to 2011. There’s a video out that captures the song pretty well too – will post it when it goes up on Youtube.
