Best Albums of 2011
Another great year for music! Check out our list of the best albums of 2011, complete with a forward by our conservative correspondent, the ever-miserable Steven Sourman. “Sigh… Music used to be so much better when I was young. You used to be able to watch music television or mainstream radio and really be told what you were supposed to like. Not like these kids these days: it’s all interwebs and deciding for themselves. How are they supposed to know which Rolling Stones re-release or new album by an aging 1970s folk singer to buy, when there’s all this new music getting in the way of the classics? This freedom of choice will be the death of us, just you watch. It’s practically communism! Have we already forgotten Vietnam, people?” – Steven Sourman, 2011 15. Blood Orange – Coastal Grooves Mike: A semi-concept album about mid 80s New York drag … Read more
Our Top 25 Songs of 2011
What a year it was! So much great music. Arcade Fire even won a Grammy (albeit about 7 years and two albums too late), for what that’s worth in 2011. And boy, there were some great songs – too many to limit to a top ten this year. So here’s our favourite 25 songs from the year that was 2011… 25. Blink 182 – “Up All Night” Mike: Remember when you were younger and you used to like music for the sheer enjoyment of it: you loved what you loved and fashions didn’t matter? How as you got older things like trends and what your friends liked started to obscure and influence your taste, and how this sometimes meant that you couldn’t always like things just because they were good? How this made you overlook things like the fact that, despite the dick jokes and American Pie soundtracks, Blink 182 … Read more

Best New Music: 2011 so far
There’s been a lot of great music this year so far. Here’s a few albums I recommend from the last 6 months or so (Warning: may contain traces of 2010). I’ve included clips so you can decide for yourself (you’re welcome). Yuck – “Yuck” The 90s are back! And not in a current New Zealand government, blindly repeating the mistakes of the past way, but in a didn’t realise how much we’d missed them, manages to sound old but somehow new again sort of way. Mixing the best bits of Dinosaur Jr, Silkworm, The Breeders, My Bloody Valentine and all that wonderful grunginess that permeated the first half of the decade, this album is basically cool as shit. There are short Sebadoh-ish rocky songs, “nicer” Lemonheads kinda ones, down to longer Sonic Youth-esque rambles. But the album somehow exists right in the here and now: old is somehow new again. … Read more

The Go! Team featuring Bethany Cosentino (Best Coast) – “Buy Nothing Day”
Holy shit this is awesome. After raving about how incredible The Go! Team were last week, I finally caught the much-hyped next single ‘”Buy Nothing Day” featuring Best Coast on C4. It really is a near perfect pop song, a late contender for single of the year. It combines everything that is great about modern pop, guitars, a great melody, an irresistible beat, and an energy that you can’t describe. I haven’t been this excited by a song since The Naked and Famous’s “Young Blood” 6 months ago – this is what great music sounds like, people. Further evidence that “Rolling Blackouts” will be an incredible musical kick-start to 2011. There’s a video out that captures the song pretty well too – will post it when it goes up on Youtube. New single from The Go! Team – “T.O.R.N.A.D.O”
For any of you who don’t know, The Go! Team are insanely awesome. If you don’t own their two albums “Thunder! Lightning! Strike!” and “Proof Of Youth”, seriously go and download them now, pronto. (There’s a pretty good selection of some of their stuff below if you wanna check them out first). The band are a collective from Brighton, based around musician Ian Parton, who crafts their albums at home, bringing in samples and beats and building entire songs around them. Live the band are an entirely different beast, featuring a multi cultural, instrument swapping six piece, fronted by female MC/ vocalist Ninja. One of my favourite live bands of all time, they bring together the best parts of garage rock, hip hop, Motown, asian pop, indie and just about anything else you can think of. Indescribably good, and known to bring tears of joy to this otherwise jaded aging … Read more
