Best Albums of the Year 2015

B4.DA.$$ – Joey Bada$$ Mike: I’ve been waiting a long time for Joey’s album to drop after the very promising 1999 mixtape way back in 2012 and his superb 2013 collaboration with DJ Premier on “Unorthodox”. And finally, in early 2015 his debut album, the awesomely named B4.DA.$$ (pronounced “Before Da Money”) finally came out. Is it worth the wait? Yeah, it’s really really good, if not amazing. Joey’s rhymes are as great as ever and there’s a tonne of killer tunes on here: “Curry Chicken”, “Paper Trail$”, “Christ Conscious”, “No. 99”. But it’s not my favourite hip hop album of the year (that would me Malik B and Mr Green’s Unpredictable) and I’m not sure why. Maybe I was spoilt by the aforementioned Premier collab, but I feel like perhaps the beats could’ve been a bit more interesting or innovative to match such a talented and charismatic rapper. I … Read more

Best Songs of the Year 2015

Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas – Beach Slang Mike: I listened to Beach Slang a lot in the latter half of 2015, and the only reason they haven’t featured more prominently in our albums list is because – as Dan pointed out to me – they only really do one song over and over. But what a song! I mean their style of music is everything I love about rock music: anthemic vocals, fuzzed out guitars, no pretension, jangly bits, a punk rock beat. But there really isn’t a lot of depth to them. For me that’s not really a criticism: I’d rather hear a band do one thing and do it brilliantly than be a half arsed jack of all trades, and “Bad Art & Weirdo” ideas nicely typifies everything that is great about Beach Slang. Picture This – Kero Kero Bonito Brendan: I’m a bit of a Japanophile … Read more

Tracks of the Mo – iii

Check out a few of the tracks below that have been blowing Riot Radio socks off this week. Wavves – Way Too Much (2015) Wavves. *shakes his head* Wavves, right, you know what I mean? Ha! Wavves! They’re just one of those bands that everything they touch turns to gold. New single Way too much is no exception. The track bursts into action with their punchy punk rock with its trademark just-enough-sloppiness, and doesn’t cease. The track length weighs in at a mammoth 2.33 long so you’d be mad to not chuck it on repeat for the sake of rinsability. It’s one of those tracks that just puts me in a good mood, hence my reason for thrashing the buggery out of it. Musical highlight: Well, that chorus is immense but the fact that it’s a new Wavves track is probably the gimme. Jonathan Bree – Bored at the Mall … Read more

Best Songs of the Year 2013

2013 was an amazing year. If you didn’t hear any music you liked then you simply weren’t listening. It definitely felt like more of an albums year to me though, which is why you’ll find that a lot of the songs on the list are from otherwise disappointing albums or are from one-off single releases – we didn’t want to double up too much with our albums list. This year we roped in some mates to help us through our critique of albums: meet Dave and Bren. You can also hear us talking about the year in music on Dave and Dan’s Egonomist podcast, and check out our Best of 2013 Spotify playlist. Enjoy our best songs of 2013! (Albums coming soon) “Bullet” – Franz Ferdinand Mike: Any year with a new Franz Ferdinand release in it is a good one. And while Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action was … Read more

New music mix – February 2013

So 2013 is shaping up to be a pretty great year for music all ready. We’ve already had a new Postal Service track after 10 years, not to mention the first new My Bloody Valentine record in 22 years(!). Plus on the horizon we’ve got new albums on the way from old Riot Radio favourites like Wavves, Theophilus and Bad Religion. Plus there’s already been a handful of exciting new acts ripping shit up: Free Energy, Pure Love, Joey Bada$$, and Bleeding Rainbow to name just a few. Read more

Best Albums of 2011

Another great year for music! Check out our list of the best albums of 2011, complete with a forward by our conservative correspondent, the ever-miserable Steven Sourman. “Sigh… Music used to be so much better when I was young. You used to be able to watch music television or mainstream radio and really be told what you were supposed to like. Not like these kids these days: it’s all interwebs and deciding for themselves. How are they supposed to know which Rolling Stones re-release or new album by an aging 1970s folk singer to buy, when there’s all this new music getting in the way of the classics? This freedom of choice will be the death of us, just you watch. It’s practically communism! Have we already forgotten Vietnam, people?” – Steven Sourman, 2011 15. Blood Orange – Coastal Grooves Mike: A semi-concept album about mid 80s New York drag … Read more

The new Wavves EP is cool as shit

Wavves are a kick ass rock band. Sure, they may have one of the worst Twitter accounts ever written by a fully grown adult, but they sure do write some fine tunes. Last year’s King Of The Beach was pretty much my favourite album of the year, and they’re back with a brand new EP of all new tunes that actually improves on its predecessor. The Life Sux EP is a slightly poppier, slightly slicker release than KoftB. Main Wavves man Nathan Williams has upped his songwriting game and raised the stakes nicely. Check out opener “Bug”. Kinda like a buzzed out and bratty Hüsker Dü meets a psychedelic early Green Day, with just the right level of stoner abandon to make it appeal to the internet generation. Cool, but it doesn’t care that it’s cool. Track two “I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl” is more of the same and available … Read more

Mike’s Top 10 of 2010 – ALBUMS

What a great year for music. Here’s my take on the what I thought the best albums of 2010 were. Best Albums Wavves – “King of the Beach” Scratchy guitars and shouty songs about going to the beach and being an idiot. This album is irresistible – it’s impossible not to get excited by Wavves’ energy. Definitely the album I’ve listened to the most this year, I really can’t recommend this highly enough. Best Coast – “Crazy for You” It’s unashamedly pop music – which is perhaps why it was missing from a lot of people’s end of year lists – but that’s what I like about it. Sunny melodies, guitars and giant pop hooks. A breath of fresh air, and a great summer soundtrack. Broken Bells – “Broken Bells” A supergroup made up of James Mercer from The Shins and star producer Dangermouse was always going to turn heads, … Read more

Discovering a Sound About The Same Time as Everybody Else Does but Before NME

The weird thing about trends or movements or ‘sounds’ is you think that there is an age where you would not only cease to care, but even if you did want to be ‘hip Uncle Dan’ and keep up with the kids, you’d stop hearing about, or relating to them.  Obviously being ‘hip Uncle Dan’ is pretty specific to me but you get the idea; you’d be essentially locked out of paradise because of your age, questionable sexual motives and bad breath. Okay, again, fairly specific. You would think you would cease to ‘get it’, but above all, you would also cease to care because, by and large, once you are out of the identity-formation stage of adolescence  ou realise, for the most part, the movements and scenes and zeitgeists that surround a ‘sound’ are nought but vapid fashion. And the shoes often hurt and are wholly impractical. When I first heard No Age’s … Read more
