Best Songs of the Year 2013

2013 was an amazing year. If you didn’t hear any music you liked then you simply weren’t listening. It definitely felt like more of an albums year to me though, which is why you’ll find that a lot of the songs on the list are from otherwise disappointing albums or are from one-off single releases – we didn’t want to double up too much with our albums list. This year we roped in some mates to help us through our critique of albums: meet Dave and Bren. You can also hear us talking about the year in music on Dave and Dan’s Egonomist podcast, and check out our Best of 2013 Spotify playlist. Enjoy our best songs of 2013! (Albums coming soon) “Bullet” – Franz Ferdinand Mike: Any year with a new Franz Ferdinand release in it is a good one. And while Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action was … Read more

Best Albums of 2011

Another great year for music! Check out our list of the best albums of 2011, complete with a forward by our conservative correspondent, the ever-miserable Steven Sourman. “Sigh… Music used to be so much better when I was young. You used to be able to watch music television or mainstream radio and really be told what you were supposed to like. Not like these kids these days: it’s all interwebs and deciding for themselves. How are they supposed to know which Rolling Stones re-release or new album by an aging 1970s folk singer to buy, when there’s all this new music getting in the way of the classics? This freedom of choice will be the death of us, just you watch. It’s practically communism! Have we already forgotten Vietnam, people?” – Steven Sourman, 2011 15. Blood Orange – Coastal Grooves Mike: A semi-concept album about mid 80s New York drag … Read more

Six reasons why you should go to the Laneways Festival

Holy shit. Did you guys see the Laneways lineup? It’s basically a who’s who of all the amazingly great new bands that we always talk about on this blog. Arguably the best NZ festival lineup of the last decade (no I’m not being paid by the Laneways people). Its about time we had a decent festival here that’s dedicated to exciting new bands and artists, so here’s six reasons why you should definitely attend. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart The best bits of early 90s shoegaze, Smiths-esque pop and 80s bubble gum rock. Great songs great vibe and just a really fun band. Their album Belong is easily one of my favourite albums of 2011. Washed Out Hazy chillwave vibes – chillwave has got to be one of the great new(ish) genres of this year. Washed Out’s album Within and Without is another one that’s well worth checking … Read more

Streaming: Best of 2011 (Part One) Mix

It’s halfway through the year, so it’s time for a “Best Of The Year So Far” compilation. It’s just like a radio station except with recent music, noone is trying to sell you vacuum cleaner insurance between songs, and without the same Lady Gaga song played three times in every hour. So in the spirit of radio: huddle round your phonic devices, light your cigars, remove your pants, and listen in. (I believe that’s how they did it). Best of 2011 (Part One) Mix by Riot Radio Endless Blue – The Horrors Belong – The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart Georgia – Yuck 50 Ways – Telekinesis Thunder On The Mountain – Wanda Jackson (feat. Jack White) Cold Feet – Liam Finn Under Cover Of Darkness – The Strokes Mind Your Manners – Chiddy Bang Sylvia – Emmy The Great Humdrum Town – Theophilus London* January Hymn – The … Read more
